CiteCheck and other tools
CiteCheck AU is a free triage step, not a replacement for a citator or a research platform.
Other tools
| Tool | What it is |
|---|---|
| LawCite | AustLII's citator: an index of cases and the citations made to them. |
| JADE | An Australian case law service from BarNet, linking cases to the cases that cite them. |
| PelAIkan | An automated reference checker built by Damien Charlotin, who maintains the AI Hallucination Cases database. |
| Lexis+ AI, Westlaw | Subscription legal research platforms with citators and AI features. |
What CiteCheck does differently
- It checks every citation in a whole document at once, and says for each one why it reached its result.
- It runs in your browser on an open snapshot: the document is never uploaded, and offline mode sends nothing at all.
- It compares party names with the citation, which catches a real citation attached to the wrong case.
- It says plainly when it cannot check something, instead of treating silence as a pass.
- Its accuracy will be published with the size of the test set and error margins (evaluation in progress).
What it cannot do
- Tell you whether a case says what it is cited for, or whether a quotation is accurate.
- Tell you whether a case is still good law, or a provision still in force for the relevant date.
- Check Victorian, Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmanian, ACT or NT case law, or anything decided after 10 March 2025.
- Check the section numbers of state Acts (titles only), or legislation of Victoria, the ACT or the NT.
- Read citations in forms it does not recognise. A citation it does not list was not checked.
Every result is a lead for a person to follow up in the official source.
